Redefining Aboriginal Evaluation

The Waawiyeyaa (Circular) Evaluation tool

Developed by Johnston Research Inc., this holistic evaluation tool, grounded in Anishnawbe traditional knowledge was created for program providers. It is a self-evaluation tool that allows the program to document both process and outcomes over time in a meaningful manner. It is also a learning tool that promotes growth and self-development among the program participants. By applying the tool at program start-up, various mid-points, and at the end, a full picture can be documented of the personal journeys of the participants in a systematic manner. The tool provides a framework from which program participants can easily relate because it is based on traditional knowledge. Non-Native people can also relate to the metaphors that explain the method. Participants like the tool because the storytelling is driven by them through their own eyes and at their own pace. This is why it is important programs utilize the tool over time and on their own accord to allow these program stories to evolve and to document that process on paper.

A 5-minute video, below, demonstrates how the tool works in detail. The full version that would be used in a group session with program participants is 22 minutes in length.
